How a timely knee replacement transformed Robert’s life

Dr Jonathan Mulford and Robert Groenewegen reunited five years post-knee reconstruction.

Ex-Footscray VFL player, Robert Groenewegen enjoyed a highly active lifestyle up until his knee started giving him troubles in his 50s. At his worst, Robert was struggling to walk, swapped his habitual exercise for regular social drinks due to mobility issues, and was starting to gain weight.

“It took me by surprise during the COVD-19 lockdowns that elective surgeries at the LGH started moving faster. I got the call up to have my knee done and was amazed by the technology and techniques that now mean within 48 hours you can be back on your feet again,” Mr Groenewegen said.

Robert remarked he now swims most days with a group of friends at Launceston Aquatic Centre and is competitive at lawn bowls.

“I’m feeling as fit as ever, and have a wonderful group of mates. We encourage each other to stay on top of our health,” he added.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Jonathan Mulford, performed the operation on Robert’s knee and was pleased to learn Robert had regained his sense of self, returning to his highly physical active lifestyle.

“To hear Robert’s knee replacement has given him a new lease on life is remarkable. Our team of surgeons and clinicians are committed to remaining competitive in our field and bringing the most cutting-edge knowledge and resources to the LGH. We can’t do this without participating in medical research and that’s where the support of community funding through Clifford Craig Foundation comes into play. I’ve advanced my skills professionally from research supported by the Foundation. Our up and coming clinicians deserve the same opportunities,” Dr Mulford said.

Clifford Craig Foundation is charity partner at AFL game Hawthorn versus North Melbourne on Friday, 28 June, University of Tasmania Stadium. All funds raised will support this year’s Medical Research Appeal aiming to reach $80,000 to grant more research projects in 2025 in celebration of Clifford Craig Research & Innovation Centre opening later this year.
